The Surprise Party

Last week I threw my best friend a surprise party and it was a total success. I was so overwhelmed and heart-warmed with the way people stepped up to help make it a success. I was crying in the kitchen while I was cleaning up because of how well it went.

That might sound strange or over sentimental to some people, but let me explain. This surprise party was out of my element. I’m usually the one to help people. I’m never the one who takes charge, organizes, and delegates. It’s scary. What if I don’t have enough help? Do I even ask for help? I don’t want to be a burden! What if there’s not enough food? What if no one comes? What if someone ruins the surprise? What if I forget something super important and everything is ruined? But that didn’t happen because people stepped up and came through. I did forget chips and salsa, but an awesome friend bought chips and salsa ingredients on his way from work and whipped it up right when he got there!

I almost didn’t want to go through with it. I almost wanted to throw in the towel and just take her out to eat. But she’s my best friend and she deserved something so special. It was so scary for me. Planning a surprise party is no small feat! It’s intimidating and there are so many what-ifs. But I didn’t throw in the towel. I went through with it. I delegated and I asked for help.

As people were milling around and as I was refilling the chip bowl, I kept thinking, who is this person that threw this party?! I couldn’t believe it was me. I don’t like to take risks, and even something as small as a surprise party was a risk for me.

So I learned something. Life is scary, but when you surround yourself with good people and learn that it is okay to ask for help, life is less scary and you actually get to do some living.

Don’t let fear stop you from doing life. Whether you’re taking bigs steps or small steps, always remember that Jesus is right there with you through it all!

Love,

Sarah Lynn

I highly recommend the devotion book 100 Days to Brave by Annie F. Downs. I’m about two-thirds of the way through and it has done wonders for me.
