Songs of Waiting

Create in Me a Clean Heart

Psalm 51. David’s prayer for forgiveness after committing adultery with Bathsheba. David’s no-no with Bathsheba is my favorite example to use for waiting until marriage, because this proves that sex isn’t just sex.

I cannot summarize and talk about the entire psalm because I’d be here all night, so I encourage you to go read it. In my Bible, this psalm is all marked up with a note that reads, “this shows how destructive sin really is.” David sinned. David had Bathsheba’s husband killed. Bathsheba got pregnant and lost the baby. She and David end up getting married and having another baby, but future generations would eventually reap the consequence of David’s actions.

David sinned. How? Because sex outside of marriage is a sin. (Don’t stop reading!)

In Psalm 51:10 David tells God, “Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me.” This is what I want to talk about.

David didn’t have a clean heart. If his heart was clean, he would have turned away when he first saw Bathsheba. But instead he acted in lust. If his heart was clean, he wouldn’t have had her husband killed after trying cover up his sin. I don’t know why David’s heart wasn’t right with God, but it wasn’t, and that’s how he fell into sin.

Having a clean heart is so important. Proverbs 4:23 tells us clearly, “Guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.” Whatever we let into our hearts will determine our actions, even how we speak! Whatever we feed ourselves will be our motivators. Therefore, it is so incredibly important to filter what we let into our lives.

Everything from music and shows, to conversations we engage in, to thoughts we think, and to people we entertain have to be filtered. It is too important! If the nature of our hearts determines our actions, we need to take this seriously.

When it comes to waiting until marriage there are a few practical things we can do keep a pure heart:

Be smart about connecting emotionally to friends of the opposite sex.

Stop listening to sexually charged music.

Stop watching sexually charged shows.

Stop reading sexually charged novels.

Take captive lustful thoughts. (It is possible to take captive every thought. Not only lustful thoughts, but every thought that should not be running through your mind).

Don’t entertain people who pull you away from, rather than closer to, God.

I wrote in one of the first SOW posts that if you really want to wait, you have to purpose to wait. In this case, purpose that you will make intentional decisions to filter what you let into your life.

Ask God to create in you a clean heart and renew a steadfast spirit (steadfast is loyal faithful, committed, devoted, and true) within you. The Holy Spirit will convict you and you will know what you should and should not be letting into your life.

Like everything else I write, this is going to be between you and God. Only God can search your heart and show you what needs to be clean and changed. I cannot do this for you. Other people cannot do this for you. But I implore you to ask God for this, because having a pure heart keeps you on the path of purity.

I want you to wait until marriage. I want you to experience the blessings of obedience to God because you are keeping yourself pure. I know God wants this too, because purity is so important to Him.

Be blessed, dear Reader.

Until next week,

Love, Sarah Lynn

Thank You God for your never ending mercy and grace, because even though we mess up and let things into our lives that shouldn’t be let in, You are faithful to forgive and make us pure. I pray that everyday we seek You and Your righteousness. Help us to keep our eyes on Jesus and make our heart’s desires toward Him. Empower us and speak to us as we continue walking the path of purity. In the name of Jesus I pray. Amen.
